Hooray! You are about to move in to your recently purchased home! You have gotten through the buying process and are just starting to make your new house a home. But, before you start unpacking boxes to get settled, we suggest you complete the following tasks in your new home:
Change the Locks – You don’t know the sellers of your new house and you also don’t know who they gave spare keys too. To protect you and your family, and for the sake of being overly cautious, you should change all the locks of the home. That way the only people who have access to your new house are you and your family.
Change the Toilet Seats – We know it’s unsettling to think about but imagine all the butts that have been on the old toilet seats in your new home? Yuck. Don’t even bother cleaning them, remove them altogether and install new ones. They are inexpensive and easy to install, and more hygienic for you and your family.
Update Your Address – You should do this as soon as you know your move-in day. You don’t want important mail and packages arriving at your old address, especially if there are bills in those envelopes. Make sure to update your address at the post office and send a note out to all your relatives and friends telling them of your new address. They will appreciate the update on your move so that they can write down your new location for future mailers.
Check the Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Monitors – Before the first night in your new home, all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors should be checked and changed if needed. Don’t miss a minute of sleep stressing about safety in your new home.
Wipe Down All Surfaces – Even though the home has likely been cleaned before your move in when the sellers moved out, we still suggest giving it a good cleaning of your own. Before you fill the cupboards and shelves with your boxed-up belongings, wipe down all surfaces and countertops.
Clean the Carpets – Just like with your surfaces, carpets should get a thorough cleaning before placing your furniture in your home. Before you move in is one of the only times you will have no furniture in your house, so it’s the ideal time to have your carpets professionally cleaned. A fresh start in your new home, it starts with a clean home!
