Maintenance Tasks to Lower Your Heating Bill
January 11, 2019 | Barb Huntley
Winter is in full force, and your heating system now is too. Please don’t continue to turn up the dial on your heat without checking your furnace to make sure it is working at full efficiency.

Task #1 – Change your filter. Furnace filters need to be changed with the seasons, but if you have pets, it must be changed more often because dust and fur can get caught in the filter. It’s the simplest and cheapest way to maximize the efficiency of your HVAC system.

Task #2 – Clean the ducts. Dust, mold, fur, and hair can build up in your vents, effecting airflow. If your filter has recently been changed, but you don’t think you are getting maximal heat, it’s probably time to get your ducts cleaned. If you are a pet owner and have never done this and are have high heating bills, now is the time to get them cleaned.

Task #3 – Hire a professional. If you cleaned your ducts and changed your filter but still are experiencing little to no heat, it’s time for a professional to step in. There may be a more severe problem. Cracks in the system can not only lead to inefficient heating and cooling but also carbon monoxide leaks. In this case, spend the money on a professional for your safety!

Task #4 – Incorporate ceiling fans. Hot air rises, so putting your fans to use will reverse the airflow of hot air, dispersing it throughout your house. If hot air is moving efficiently around your home, you won’t need to crank up the thermostat.
